Creating an online store takes more than a catalogue and a payment button. You need to prepare the offer, stock, orders, delivery and customer service. Your first goal is a complete journey: a customer selects a product, understands the total, places an order and receives the promised follow-up.
This guide presents a launch method and a WordPress and WooCommerce setup example when that option suits the project. Do not assume your iMasterWeb package already includes a store, payment configuration or particular maintenance arrangement: confirm the scope.
1. Describe what you sell before selecting software
List product families, item count, variations, countries served and stock management. Specify whether you sell physical goods, downloads, services or subscriptions: their journeys differ.
Choose a small set of representative products for the first version. Include a genuinely difficult case: multiple sizes, an out-of-stock item, a heavy product or restricted delivery. Testing only the simplest product can hide important constraints.
Decide who packs orders, answers customers and maintains availability. A technically open store without a fulfilment process is unfinished.
2. Choose according to the work the store must do
You can use a hosted platform, an installation on suitable hosting or professional assistance. Those labels alone do not determine the outcome. Compare catalogue needs, payment methods available for your business, delivery, integrations and data retrieval.
WooCommerce is an option for WordPress, not a mandatory replacement for an existing store on another system. Shopify, PrestaShop, OpenCart, Magento Open Source and osCommerce were also named in the historical article. Their services and technical requirements are not interchangeable.
Ask for a demonstration using your actual scenarios and an initial, recurring and variable cost breakdown. Adapt our website budgeting method to the store.
3. Build an operating budget
Include product content, photography, necessary licences, professional assistance, payment fees under the relevant agreement, packaging, shipping and returns handling. Check subscriptions and volume-related charges.
Free software does not make the complete store free. Old fixed prices in the source article are not a reliable comparison basis. Obtain quotes for required functions and list exclusions explicitly.
4. Prepare the environment and initial settings
For WordPress, first check the existing installation, suitable hosting, HTTPS and a recoverable backup. Prepare changes on a protected staging environment. Isolate outgoing messages and integrations that could trigger real actions.
- Confirm WooCommerce is the selected solution and no existing store needs to be retained instead.
- Prepare the business address, currency and selling regions using actual company information.
- Work through setup without automatically enabling every suggested option.
- Check shop, cart, checkout and account pages and their navigation.
- Assign responsibility for products, orders and updates.
Screens can vary with version and setup. Official WooCommerce setup documentation.
5. Create a product page that supports a decision
Prepare the name, images, specifications, use, limitations, price, variations, reference and availability. For physical goods, verify the weight and dimensions used for shipping. Write information specific to your offer rather than simply copying supplier text.
Choose the appropriate WooCommerce product type. A variable product can have separate prices and stock for each variation; availability for one size does not establish availability for all sizes. Product documentation.
Fictional example: for a bag in two sizes, check the image, capacity, dimensions, price and stock of each size. On a phone, customers should be able to choose a variation and understand what enters the cart.
6. Configure delivery and order totals
Define accepted destinations, methods and actual rules: flat rates, any threshold, collection or carrier calculation where arranged. In WooCommerce, zones determine methods shown for an address; matching order matters. Shipping zone documentation.
Test an accepted address, an excluded destination and a genuine edge case. Check totals and delivery information. Have the appropriate person validate tax settings for the business; do not copy a generic tutorial rate.
7. Prepare payment and order handling
Select a service compatible with your country, activity, currency and store software. Check fees, activation conditions, refunds and payout arrangements. Use the documented integration rather than asking customers to email card details or enter them in an ordinary contact form.
Returning to a confirmation page does not by itself prove payment. Verify confirmation at the payment service, the order state and the absence of duplicate processing. Assign someone to handle declined payments, pending orders and anomalies.
8. Prepare customer information and sales conditions
Arrange information suitable for the business, products and markets: identity and contact, product characteristics, price and fees, delivery, returns, warranties, complaints and personal data handling. Legal and tax content must fit the actual situation.
For sales aimed at consumers in France, consult official DGCCRF resources, including its guidance on price information. Installing a template page does not validate compliance. Other markets can have different requirements.
9. Test the entire chain before opening
Run tests on isolated staging using the integration’s intended payment test mode. Control external effects too: a test payment can still trigger emails, synchronisation or fulfilment. WooCommerce order testing documentation.
| Scenario | Expected evidence |
|---|---|
| Accepted order | Correct item, total, order state and confirmation |
| Decline or abandonment | Understandable message and no unjustified fulfilment |
| Unavailable variation | Behaviour matches your stock policy |
| Unsupported destination | Visible limitation and no inconsistent rate |
| Return and refund | Understood procedure, records and appropriate stock handling |
| Mobile use | Usable selections, forms and buttons |
Record the test reference, expected outcome and observation. Before launch, separately check production settings, access, notifications, shipping and removal of test modes. This does not mean generating uncontrolled real purchases.
10. Open gradually and monitor orders
Start with a scope you can fulfil. Check initial orders, delivered messages, stock differences and customer questions. Follow product → cart → order → confirmed payment, distinguishing tests from genuine purchases.
